When we think of outdoor spaces a ton of things come to mind…. Winter bonfires, summer parties, dinner on the porch on a cool fall night, and the joy of seeing your flowers start to bloom again in the spring. Outdoor spaces translate gracefully into every season, don’t they?
When it comes to seating… make sure there is plenty of it. Nothing is more welcoming than everyone gathered outside with plenty of room for more. A sofa, a couple chairs, and a outdoor dining table with chairs that are versatile should do just the trick. One addition that we absolutely love on our porch is our hanging swing. It’s great for the kids or anyone to relax on, and creates the perfect reading spot for when the weather is nice and you just need a little bit of R&R.
Speaking of outdoor dining…. Go ahead and splurge on that custom farmhouse table that you see all the time. Yes, it seats 18 people. Yes, it is huge. But it is also an incredible addition to any outdoor space that allows for friends and family to all gather in one sitting. And down here in the south (and everywhere else-but especially in the south) we know how important shared meals are. Even dare to be bold and add an inset running down the middle which could be used as a place for ice and drinks or even converted into a shucked oyster catch all for an oyster roast come winter. If you are in the Wilmington area, John White at Soundside Carpentry is my go to man for all things custom and wooden.
One things most outdoor spaces lack is COLOR. Of course it is a little harder to add color outdoors than inside your home since there are no walls to paint and everything has to be pretty much weatherproof. Two keys places to focus on when trying to add color outside are accent pillows and a great rug (weather approved, of course). Serena & Lily always has great outdoor pillows that are fun and colorful, and as far as rugs go Surya.com has a ton of amazing options in so many different styles.
No matter what direction you take, make the most of your outdoor spaces! They aren't just for the warm seasons. By making it an area you will use year round you add both value and function while also adding charm. Until next time!
